Our Medical Devices segment produces a broad range of innovative products used primarily by health care professionals in the fields of orthopaedics, neurovascular, surgery, vision care,l6 infection prevention, diagnostics, cardiovascular disease, sports medicine, and aesthetics. This segment is comprised of our Global Medical Solutions, Global Orthopaedics and Global Surgery Groups.
The Medical Devices and Diagnostics segment accounted for about 37% of Johnson & Johnson's total sales in 2014. Our businesses are global leaders with strong market positions across a broad range of areas. In the last two years, we have invested approximately £2.2 billion in research and development for our Medical Devices division, advancing our pipelines and developing new technologies and solutions across our businesses. We have also made decisions to shape our portfolio, including completing the $20 billion acquisition of Synthes, Inc.--the largest acquisition in Johnson & Johnson history, while also continuing to take a disciplined approach to adapting our businesses to reflect the evolving needs of the marketplace.
